Nephrotic syndrome is a pathological condition in which permeability of glomerular basement membrane to plasma protein increased. It results in low blood proteins (albumin), high cholesterol, and high triglyceride levels in the blood.
In Ayurvedic classical text books, Nephrotic syndrome is mentioned under the Prameha Rog (a disease of urinary system with altered composition, frequency and quantity of urine). Nephrotic Syndrome can be correlated with Sandrameha a subtype of Prameha.
As per Ayurveda, there are three Doshas (Bio-elements) in the body – Vata, Pitta, Kapha. The disease is caused by the vitiation of these bio-elements. Nephrotic Syndrome is caused due to the vitiation of Pitta dosha (Fire Element) along with vitiation of Rasadhatu, ojas, Mutra and udaka involving Mutravaha srotas (Excretory channels). Treatment includes Ayurvedic herbs for normalizing Pitta Dosha.
