How we treat HIV virus ?

HIV is a virus that gradually attacks the immune system, which is our body’s natural defence against pathogenic microorganisms. If a person is infected with HIV, he will find it harder to fight off infections. The virus destroys a type of WBCs called a T-helper cell or CD4 cells and replicates itself inside them. HIV has proven troublesome in inducing an antibody response, making it very hard to develop a vaccine. Even in case, if the vaccine is administered, as soon as HIV antibodies are produced, the virus changes rapidly to counteract them. According to Ayurveda, the AIDS disease may be correlated with “Kshaya’ or “Ojakshaya’ meaning loss of energy. The disease is caused by the dominant Kapha dosha along with the other doshas which tend to block the path for the flow of rasadi dhatus in their respective locations ,cause deterioration of saptha dhatu Rasa(plasma), Rakta (blood cells), Mansa ( muscular tissue), Meda (adipose tissue), Asthi (bony tissue), Majja (bone marrow) and the Shukra (reproductive tissue), thus resulting into the disease. Currently, there is no vaccine for HIV/AIDS but Ayurvedic treatments have evolved which are much more efficacious. Various immunomodulator therapeutics and antiviral herbal combinations are used for the treatment. These improve the quality of life of the patient, extends life expectancy and reduces the risk of transmission of virus.

Initially, the patient is given tonics and rejuvenators (Rasayanas) to boost immunity levels, to invigorate the system and to galvanize appetite.

Secondly, the blood is purified with appropriate herbal medications. These medications are helpful in dispelling toxins from the liver. A strengthening diet along with medicated ghee preparations and soups is recommended. Where as spicy, oily and acidic foods are to be avoided. A little alcohol is recommended as Anupama (carrier) to aid the digestion, and also to remove blockages in the flow of Rasadi dhatus, i.e. Srothorodha.

Various immunomodulator therapeutics and antiviral herbal combinations are used for treatment. Several studies have shown that certain herbal-mineral compounds prepared as per the formulae prescribed by sages like Agasthya, Charaka, Sarangadhara, and others for the treatment of Kshaya (Decrease or depletion of body tissues) have brought remarkable results in improving the condition of AIDS patients. Rasayana and Vajikara effects of these therapeutics are beneficial for the patients.
